- What
is Far InfraRed Energy?
Infrared rays make up about 80% of the spectrum of energy that we
receive from the sun, and are usually divided in to three zones:
near, middle, and far. Studies have shown that mid-to-far-infrared
rays with wavelengths ranging from 5 to 14 microns play an additionally
important role for the development of living things, and for this
reason, were defined by NASA as ‘bioenergetic rays’,
and attracting the attention of researchers world-wide for their
potential impact on health and well-being.
Most of us are already well familiar with the vital heat that far
infrared provides our daily lives. Premature babies are constantly
nurtured with the warmth of far infrared in neonatal units. The
same heat keeps our food warm under lamps in cafeterias all day,
and us in the bathroom.
Physical therapists of course have been using far infrared lamps
for decades in the treatment of soft tissues.
What you might not have known is that your TV remote also uses infrared
energy, but it works on short, near infrared which isn’t hot
at all so you can’t feel them. Since infrared waves are not
visible to the naked eye, you need special equipment to translate
the energy into colored light. Owls and reptiles have special photoreceptors
in their eyes for detecting warm –blooded prey at night, –
so successfully in fact, that the military and emergency services
have developed man-made photoreceptive equipment for ‘seeing’
in the dark.
Technological developments over the past half a century or so around
the world, notably Russia, Japan and NASA’s work on the use
of infrared for healing in space has created a new generation of
medical infrared applications.
Near, mid, and far infrared frequencies have been used in laser
technology for some time now, and more recently medicine has been
focusing on the use of infrared delivery through light emitting
diode (LED) photodynamic therapy for the treatment of brain tumors.
Far infrared is also proving to be a highly effective, non-invasive
tool for diagnosing diabetes by measuring glucose levels without
drawing blood, and for mammograms without painful squishing of breasts!

- Is
it safe? Can I overdose on infrared energy?
No, otherwise we'd all only
be able to go outdoors for limited times. There are certain conditions
when the use of far infrared equipment may not be beneficial. You'll
find these listed in the section on cautions and precautions and
below in 'contraindications for the use of WullStone FIRE.'

- Are
there any contraindications for the use of WullStone FIRE?
Before administering WullStone
FIRE therapy, you should be aware that as for any treatment, circumstances
may exist that would make its use not the best thing for the recipient.
As a professional, you will always complete a full evaluation of
the recipients’ individual needs and constitution prior to
administration so as to maximize potential benefits. As always,
if the intended recipient is receiving treatment for any medical
condition, ask them to obtain approval from their physician first.
Keep full and accurate records.
It is inadvisable
to apply WullStone FIRE massage with the following conditions:
- All untreated
malignant tumors and diseases.
- All acute inflammations
and infections - systemic or localized - including fever.
Heating is strictly contraindicated over enclosed (foci) infections
such as dental, joint, or soft tissues.
- Thrombosis and
thrombophlebitis.
- Vascular insufficiency.
- Hemophiliacs
and anyone predisposed to potential hemorrhage including those
taking blood thinners or anticoagulants should avoid use of
heating therapy that would induce vasodilatation. Since WullStone
FIRE Therapy may be used locally, isolated use on the extremities,
scalp or face may not pose a problem. Please check with the
supervising physician for approval prior to administration.
- Great Caution
should be taken in the presence of the following, and where
appropriate, the affected area avoided completely:
- It is inadvisable
to raise the core temperature of someone suffering from adrenal
suppression, systemic lupus erythematosus, chronic diabetes,
or multiple sclerosis. Since the WullStone FIRE Custom Care
System provides localized far infrared penetration, you should
check first with the supervising physician and approval for
use.
- With the use
of some prescription drugs. Check with the physician first
for possible interaction with infrared energy.
- Loss of large
area of thermal skin sensation.
- Some localized
skin conditions. Check with a dermatologist.
- Joint problems
and recent injuries. Do not heat the affected area for the
first 48 hours or until the acute inflammation has subsided.
Joints that suffer chronically from heat and swelling may
respond poorly to vigorous heating of any kind.
- Conditions of
treated cancers. Check with supervising physician.
- Seek supervising
physician approval for use during pregnancy. Full body infrared
saunas may be contraindicated during pregnancy, however localized
administration may be acceptable and highly beneficial. Avoid
the abdomen and certain Chi point work.
- During menstruation,
administration of localized infrared energy to the lower back
and abdomen may temporarily increase menstrual flow. Check
what is acceptable with the recipient first relative to her
‘normal’ cycle. For the majority of women, Far
Infrared Energy massage helps to relieve and minimize the
physical and emotional discomfort experienced during the pre-menstrual
and menstrual period.
- Avoid using the
product around the eye area for a prolonged period of time.
Remove contact lenses prior to intended prolonged administration
and deep relaxation.
- Generally metal
pins, rods, artificial joints and other implants reflect infrared
waves. However, silicone does absorb infrared energy although
it apparently would take over 200º Celsius to melt so
should not pose a problem.
- If any of these
conditions exist, or if the client is unsure about any potential
medical condition, please have them consult with their supervising
physician prior to receiving the first treatment.
- During the treatment,
it’s advisable to ask the client periodically about
their comfort levels. WullStone FIRE massage is a deeply relaxing
and highly pleasant experience, so if the recipient feels
any discomfort during treatment you may simply need to change
the temperature setting, the client’s position, support
or cover, pressure, the location or tempo of your application
techniques. If discomfort persists, then the use of far infrared
may not be appropriate for that individual at that time. Should
any condition worsen after administration of the WullStone
FIRE Custom Care System, its’ use should be discontinued
and medical advice sought.
- Remember you
have immediate and complete control over the product temperature
settings, and can accommodate the recipients’ comfort
level quickly and easily: simply at the touch of a button.

- How
long does a treatment take?
- The
benefits of WullStone FIRE may begin to be experienced after only
a few moments of use. However, Master Kim recommends a minimum application
of 10 minutes.
- Including
15 to 20 minutes of WullStone FIRE massage to a facial, manicure
or pedicure treatment is about just right.
- A 30
minute application is perfect to include in a back facial, or anti-cellulite
treatment.
- Most
recipients say that a longer application time of between 45 to 60
minutes is required to slip into the deeply profound relaxation
that WullStone FIRE facilitates.
- Once
you’ve experienced WullStone FIRE, you’ll understand
the sheer luxury and intense pleasure of the 190 minute Lymphatsu©
treatment: it’s simply transformational.
